Cyclone Jokwe, which is now classified as a tropical storm, is still hanging around off the Mozambique coastline. On tuesday it did a sudden turn towards land and is currently aimed towards Inhambane but is moving very slowly. It is very hard to predict what it will do next. The weather at the lodge is still beautifull but with big swells. Yes I do have access to lots of the inside information on Pomene but I live in South Africa and I rely on information passed on to me by others. On Thursday morning, satellite images showed that Jokwe was still in the southern Mozambique Channel and was much nearer Madagascar than Mozambique. The storm was moving at only three knots (about 5.5 kilometres an hour). Being the webmaster for Pomene.com does not make me an expert on Pomene. For the past four days, the cyclone has been in the south of the Mozambique Chan nel, going round in circles, sometimes veering towards Mozambique, then changing direction and heading towards Madagascar. The satellite images show that the storm system has lost its cohesion. The winds and waves generated by Jokwe have been dropping in speed and height, to the point where it no longer classifies as a cyclone. As at Friday, the wind speed had dropped to about 65 kilometres an hour, and the maximum significant wave height was about 4.5 metres. According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (run by the US Navy and Air Force) , the storm has continued to weaken, and the Centre has announced that it will n o longer be posting any more of its six hourly warnings about its status. However, the centre will continue to monitor the Mozambique Channel for any sign of revival by cylcone Jokwe. Although Jokwe is no longer a menace to either the Mozambican or Madagascan coas ts, the remnants of the storm are still a danger to any shipping in the area.
